Pinterest is a website and mobile application designed for finding and sharing information from various parts of the internet via photos and links. The site was launched in 2011 by Paul Sciarra, Evan Sharp, and Ben Silbermann and has its headquarters in San Francisco, California. Pinterest was designed with the idea of creating a space where members can save ideas to use in their lives rather than as a platform for sharing images with others. Ideas such as recipes or shopping links can be organized via board by categories, board categories are automatically generated by Pinterest but users may rename boards or create their boards to organize their saved items. Users can save information known as “pins” from the accounts of other users or share pins from other websites via the “Pin it” button that can be added to a website or downloaded to a browser by users. Businesses may create a Pinterest account and use “Rich Pins” to allow users to purchase directly from the Pinterest website or mobile application. Signing up for a Pinterest account is free for personal and businesses, and requires only an email address and password, an age for personal users, and an email address and password for a business account. There is no charge to use the site and all features are available to all users without the need for a paid subscription. Businesses may purchase the Rich Pins to advertise their products if desired but this is not required. Members can delete the individual boards used to organize pins at any time or may choose to close and delete their accounts entirely if desired. More information is included here about how to go about closing your Pinterest account.
