Flickr is an image and video hosting site that was launched originally in 2004 by Ludicorp, founded by Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake. Flickr changed hands several times, being sold to Yahoo which was then acquired by Verizon. As of 2018, SmugMug owns Flickr and has its headquarters in San Francisco, California. The site is available to users globally in 10 different languages. Members upload and store videos and photos which can then be shared with others via the site. Flickr surpassed 87 million registered users in 2013 and had surpassed 6 billion images hosted on the site as far back as 2011 with the number of hosted images continuing to grow. There are both free and paid account options available. Users may sign up for a free account which allows for up to 1,000 individual photos and videos to be uploaded and provides the member with access to editing tools and sharing options. This account type will include ads shown on the site to support the ability to offer it for free. Flickr Pro accounts have unlimited storage and ads will not be shown on the site for these users, and these members have access to automatic backups of their photos and videos via the sites automatic uploader for computers. Monthly Pro memberships are $5.99 per month, while annual memberships are $50.04 per year. Annual memberships also include discounts to other sites including SmugMug, Adobe, Blurb, and Priime. Memberships automatically renew each month or each year but may be cancelled at any time if desired.
