Equifax is a consumer credit reporting agency. Along with Experian and TransUnion, Equifax is a member of the “big three”, the three largest credit reporting agencies. Equifax was originally founded in 1889 by Guy and Cator Woolford. The agency is based in Atlanta, Georgia and collects information on over 800 million individuals and over 88 million businesses around the world. Equifax also provides credit monitoring and fraud prevention services as part of its 3.1 billion dollars in annual revenue and employs more than 9,000 individuals in 14 countries.
For most of its history, Equifax was focused on providing credit reports and analyses to businesses and credit grantors to enable them to decide what credit products to offer to a customer and at what rates to offer those products. Since 1999, however, Equifax has offered credit monitoring, fraud prevention, and identity theft protection services directly to consumers. These services are offered on a paid basis, in addition to the one free credit report, all three bureaus are required by law to provide consumers in each 12 month period.
Consumer services are offered in two plans, an individual plan, and a family plan. The individual plan includes combined monitoring of the customer’s credit score from all three bureaus, fraud alerts, monitoring of suspicious websites for your personal information, up to 1 million dollars in identity theft protection, and assistance canceling and replacing credit cards and identification in case of a lost or stolen wallet. This plan is available for $19.95 per month. A family plan is also available with the same features along with the ability to add a second adult and monitor the information of up to 4 children, also for $19.95 per month. Both plans automatically renew and bill every 30 days until canceled. There is no minimum commitment but refunds are not typically available if you cancel the plan before the end of the billing period. Some additional information is available below to help you cancel your Equifax protection plan.
