BetterHelp was founded in 2013 by Alon Matas and Danny Bragonier and was acquired by Teladoc in 2015. BetterHelp provides direct-to-consumer access to behavioral health services. Customers are provided access to counselors and therapists via the BetterHelp web-based portal. Each individual is provided with a dedicated “room” within the website that is accessible from any device that is connected to the internet from any physical location The portal is available to both client and provider 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
BetterHelp members have several methods of communicating with their therapist or counselor via the platform. Clients may exchange messages with their provider which are stored on the server so that the client may go back and read the messages again if desired in the future. Clients may also chat live with their provider, choose to have a phone call session to talk with their provider or the client may utilize video conferencing to video chat with their counselor or therapist. The cost of the service varies based on several factors. Some insurance plans will cover telemedicine sessions for mental health with the associated copays, for clients without insurance coverage for the service, the cost will vary based on whether they pay full or reduced price fees. Pricing ranges from $40.00 to 70.00 dollars per week for the service, which is billed once a month.
